Rocky Point baseball teams give back

November 15, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Continuing what has become a Rocky Point tradition, members of the Rocky Point School District baseball teams recently volunteered at Maureen’s Haven Homeless Shelter.

Lead by team coaches Andrew Aschettino, Anthony Anzalone and Eric Strovink, the middle school and high school students worked together to set up the location, stock the pantries, provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, supply toiletries, homemade baked goods, backpacks and even gift cards for meals to a fast food restaurants for future dates. Additionally, the students donated enough socks to give a new pair to each homeless person for weeks to come.

Teaming up for the troops in Massapequa

November 15, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Elementary students in the Massapequa School District recently did their part to help the troops. Birch Lane and Lockhart elementary schools participated in the Adopt-A-Battalion collection drive to coincide with Veterans Day.

Children were asked to bring in donations such as gum, candy, granola bars, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, shampoo and sunscreen. Each grade was assigned a specific item to ensure that all needs would be met for the care packages to be sent to military servicemen and women overseas.

The collection drive was organized by the Student Council at Birch Lane under the direction of teachers Lauren Marocchi and Alison Morgan and by the SADD Club at Lockhart led by social worker Kerry Rivera.

Painted Runners Raise Support

Setauket Elementary School recently sponsored its first Color Splash Run/Walk in honor of one of Setauket’s students, Amelia Calderone, who is suffering from Langerhans cell histiocytosis, an illness that causes the production of too many white blood cells and causes the formation of tumors.

Approximately 600 students, parents and staff members registered for the event. Despite the rain, the majority of registrants turned out for dancing, color-splashing and a one-mile trek in honor of this very special student. The race went from Setauket School through Frank Melville Park and back to the school and raised over $6,800 for the Calderone family.
